JOVAL, Jody August 29, 1968 - March 17, 2009 Taken away from us much too early. A daughter, sister, aunt, soul mate and great friend. Jody battled cancer with 'the eye of the tiger' attitude. She was a great person who put others needs in front of her own. Jody was a nurse at RJH and her passion was quite evident in her daily work. Jody enjoyed fast pitch at Heywood Park where she played with the Victoria Athletics. Besides her dedication to the medical field and her love of sports, Jody was an adventurer. Jody excelled with event organization, putting together game plans, and following through on projects to ensure the happiness of others. While the great staff and volunteers of Hospice were taking care of Jody, she was still organizing another 'event'. We believe she is organizing as we speak. While we mourn the loss of Jody, we also appreciate that she was able to enjoy a special ceremony with her soulmate Todd. It was a celebration with many special 'toasts', the way Jody would have wanted it. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held at the Arbor Reception Centre of Sands Funeral Chapel at 1803 Quadra Street, Victoria, BC, on Friday March 20, 2009 at 1:00 pm. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Jody's memory may be made to The World Parrot Refuge: PO Box 645, Coombs, BC VOR 1MO 5 3 1 8 4 2

Born May 10, 1988 along with his twin sister Lena, Matthew attended Southwood from September 2002 to March 2005 when he passed away from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Although legally blind for most of his life, Matt wouldn’t let the disability damper his spirit or stop him from trying anything new. Matthew spent his entire schooling in the WRDSB system and was an honour student each year while attending Southwood. An avid sports fan, Matt was especially fond of the Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Maple Leafs and the WWE.  Matt was an inspiration to all who met him. Susan Sanderson, a teacher of the blind said, “Matt was a unique individual, a funny and generous boy who worked hard to overcome obstacles. Matt inspired others and she often used him as an example when helping other blind children realize that nothing is impossible.”  Southwood was certainly a better place when Matt made his presence known.

Good mate at Southwood and for many years after, still miss Degeregl and his sense of humour, he had a tough go health wise for many years but it didn't keep him down, helped me sell a bull at the Ayr Plowing match years ago and he didn't know a damn thing about bulls.
He taught me a major lesson in life-" when the parents are away on holidays and say that they'll be home a certain day- don't wait until that day to clean up the mess- do it a couple of days ahead- they may come home early". RIP old friend.

In loving memory of my dad Rick.

If tears could build a stairway
And memories a lane
I'd walk right up to Heaven
And bring you back again.

Love your daughter Angela.

Beverly Crocker

July 1st, 1958 - December 4th, 1989

Bev spent 5 years at Southwood from 1972 to 1977.  She was a member of the volleyball team and a friend to everyone.  Those were the days when school spirit was amazing and Bev and her friends would scream and cheer on the bleachers at the Sabre Football games through rain, sleet and freezing weather.  Good friends back then were Tracey Rutherford, Wendy Wells, Linda Murphy, Stan Adamson, to name a few.  Bev would not have missed this reunion for anything!!  Her spirit still lives on through me each and every day but she is missed more than anyone can ever imagine.

Beverly Kate Reid Crocker passed away suddenly on Dec. 4, 1989 in a tragic car accident on her way to work on a stormy December morning.  She was married only six weeks earlier to the love of her life Matt Ruetz of Mildmay and was living there at the time.  She sadly missed the birth of her sister Robin's first child Candice Beverly by 6 days.  She was so looking forward to that event! Beverly graduated from Conestoga College with a diploma in Recreation Leadership and subsequently worked with head injury adolescents at the Hugh MacMillan Medical Centre in Toronto followed by working with developmentally delayed individuals in the Walkerton area. Bev would say that she had no regrets as she lived each day to the fullest and was not afraid to take risks for the sake of an adventure.  She was joined by her father Jim in 1999 but is still sadly missed by her mother Ivy and sister Robin.

Bev and I moved out to Calgary together to explore the unknown and became very close friends.  I have never in my life met such a nice individual as Bev, she was a ray of sunshine with the voice of an angel.
Sadly missed by myself and many friends that I have spoken too.
One day we will meet again Bev and reunite.

Jerry Weber was my neighbour and friend for many years. He is missed greatly by all that knew him. He was so proud of his students that have done well with their talents that he honed. Every year at Christmas he always gave great humerous gifts that suited the person's personality that were receiving them. He also taught me in Gr. 9 many, many years ago and I definitely was not talented....lol. R.I.P Jerry miss you.

From Maureen Bowen on October 26th, 2011
Mr. Weber was still there when I was at Southwood, graduating in 1984.  He was a fantastic art teacher and inspired many students to expand their creativity and endeavour to carry on in the field, myself included.  I will never forget him, he was a huge influence in my life.

From Gary Cassel on February 4th, 2012
What a great guy. When I got there in grade 9, I saw that that the grade 12's and 13's were doing oil painting as part of the course. I told him I would like to try and he let me even in class when my other projects were done. He even went so far as to send me home with the unused bits out of all the empty tubes of oil paint. What a great guy. You will be missed.

From Lou-Anne Hicks-Korolischuk on March 4th, 2012
Mr. Weber was a stand-out teacher, he was my favourite.  His art history classes with his home slides from his travels all over Europe I will always remember.

From Gail (Magowan) Versteeg on April 15th, 2012
Jerry Weber was close family friend and neighbour for many years. Jerry had a great sense of humour and was man of unlimited talent and compassion.   I am privileged to have a charcoal portrait that he did for me of my daughter Erin when she was very little and I will forever cherish it. Jerry is greatly missed by everyone who knew him as a friend, a teacher and neighbour.

Mr. Weber...I can't say enough kind words about this gentle human being.  Patient, understanding, funny, creative..a true inspiration to all those students who were lucky to have him as a teacher.  My fondest memories of Southwood will always be in Mr. Weber's art class.  You are still missed but not forgotten.

"Mr. Weber" a more positive attitude couldn't be found anywhere in the school. There were many times where he would just let me do my thing rather than sticking to the lesson plan.

His encouraging words are still with me today!

From Teresa Ferrazzi on July 15th, 2015
Mr Weber.... I am sad to discover today about your passing away 3 years ago.... I wish now that I had followed my instinct to come and visit you upon returning from my  sojourn in Italy of 12 years, in 2001....  You were the one to restore me in returning to school after having gone to work for a year after St. Benedict's high School near failure!  My love for art was reinstated and fostered through your ever encouraging words and positive outlook.  It is in your classes that I found some worth within myself... thank you Mr. Weber, and may our ever loving God grant you eternal joy and peace!

From Wayne Greulich on March 24th, 2013
As one of Angelo's closest friends (although in those years he spelled his name Aggello) during high school, I was surprised to just learn of his passing.  Some from the 1969 - 1973 era may remember the two of us playing chess almost every lunch hour in the cafeteria.

He remained one of my closest friends after high school, although life events eventually caused our get togethers to become less and less.  The last time I met with him face-to-face was in 1991.

He was a great intellect and it's not surprising he wound up becoming a lawyer.

I am having difficulty trying to trace down his obituary or any other information about him.  If anyone could help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it.

From Mandy Ho on May 28th, 2013
I am not a Southwood alumni.  Mr. Angelo Raftopoulos is a very smart and kind hearted gentleman.  I worked under his wing for two years.  He showed me what a real gentleman is.  He cares for his family and his staff.  He will be well missed by everyone know him.  Best wishes to his two wonderful daughters.

From Tina Raftopoulos on September 3rd, 2013
Angelo Raftopoulos was my father and such a wonderful man. I will never forget the impact he had on my life. Even though he was only with me for a short 11 years, he taught me so many things. He was always kind, generous and would leave a positive imprint on anyone who knew him. I'm happy to see people have remembered him so fondly. There isn't a day that passes when I don't think about my dad. Myself, my sister Christine and my mother Debbie are all best friends and we will never forget all of the beautiful memories we shared. We spent many summers travelling and boating. He loved the Toronto Blue Jays, football and Elton John. He passed on May 31st, 2003 and is buried at Pine Hills Cemetery in Toronto, ON.

Mr. Dunn helped to make me the man I am today. He was a great teacher and mentor.  Until I read this article I had no idea he'd died. 30 years later I still find a tear for you...God speed Don.

Thanks, Don, for helping me discover the 'theories' behind all the things that make internal combustion engines run as magnificently as they do. (Well...SOME of them!)
I'll never forget the lesson you gave on day one of class: holding the piece of coated wire across a car battery's terminals and watching it go up in smoke....with the caution, "Here's what happens when you wear a watch and work behind the dashboard of a car!"

Rest in peace, Don......and, forgive us for smoking in the washroom across the hall from shop.

Tribute

From Wilma Schultz on October 30th, 2011
Image Dr. Gayfer was a wonderful lover, composer and teacher of music. He inspired many of us with a life long love of music in all forms. On a personal note in Gr 11 my family moved to the country almost to the village of Clyde. That year I was playing in both Intermediate and Senior Concert bands with weekly practises starting at 7:30 in the morning. Needless to say the 2 school busses I used to get to school didn't get me there in time for practise. So, twice a week Dr Gayfer would find me sitting in his Morris Minor when he came out to his parking lot on Clyde Road, my Dad having dropped me there on his way into town at 6:30. Can you imagine any teacher being permitted to to that in today's world?

From Ken Black on February 5th, 2012

From Sandi Sherk on May 30th, 2012
I remember Dr. Gayfor from the years my brother, Craig Wylie (clarinet and sax) and my uncle Neil McAllister (clarinet, timpani) would have barbeques for Southwood band members at our house in Ayr. He and his wife, sons Jim and John, would join him. He WAS music. And he was loved>
